The Gurukul System of Education

The ‘Gurukul’ system of education is the essence of Indian way of imparting education. Basically, a Gurukul is a school where students learn and live along with their Gurus and receive formal education, ethical values and life skills. Gurukul has significant mythological connotations as well. Lord Ram, the Pandavas, Luv-Kush, and Lord Krishna received their formal education in a Gurukul under the guidance of a Guru and even today, the Gurukul system holds a great significance.

Vedic Age & Gurukul System

The Gurukul System was more widespread during the Vedic age where students were taught diverse subjects. The education was largely based on Vedas, grammar, the study of nature, logic, reasoning, science and other skills that are necessary for an occupation. Gurukul was the home of the Guru and the centre of learning where disciples stayed till the end of their schooling. Gurus as well as Shishyas resided in the same dwelling. The relationship between Guru and Shishya was considered sacred. No fee was taken from the students. Though, the disciples had to offer a Gurudakshina. It was a symbol of deep respect paid to the Guru.Adopt a caring of a senior Citizen

Gurukuls in the Present Time

The Gurukul system of education is still prevalent in India. They focus on imparting education to the needy students in a natural surroundings where they can live with other students while inculcating the values of humanity, discipline and brotherhood. They study language, Science, Mathematics through Swadhyay and group discussions. They also acquire knowledge in fields like sports, arts, crafts, dancing and singing. 

At the Gurukul, the focus is on developing intelligence and ability of critical thinking in the learners. They take part in activities such as meditation, Pranayam and Mantra chanting. One such Gurukul is, Maharishi Vedvyas Gurukul Vidyapeeth which is a unique centre of teaching located at Anand Dham Ashram, Delhi. Here, students pursue their studies as per the curriculum of the Sanskrit university of Varanasi. They study all formal subjects along with the Vedas, Purans, Ramayana, Gita, Meditation, Music, Computer, and also get involved in co-curricular activities.  The beautiful centre of learning is situated in a pollution-free, clean and natural environment. All necessary educational facilities are available here where students from the underprivileged and poor sections of Indian society are given free education. The Way Forward

Modern Gurukuls should be based on applied knowledge to prepare the students in all areas of education. It could be done by creating a perfect environment of academics and extracurricular activities for students. The application of the Gurukul system works on a value-based system and so the focus should be on the individuality of the student. They must excel in their area of interest. It will build a good character in them so that they can become what they want by understanding the whole concept of a balanced life.
